If you are arrested -

If you are arrested and/or charged with a crime, do not make any statement before consulting an attorney. If arrested or confronted with a police interrogation, you must be very careful to avoid making problems for yourself.

What do you mean, "make problems for myself"?

Legal problems stemming from arrest can cost you a lot of time, money, distress or even your freedom. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to try to resolve a problem without the help of your attorney. Your attorney knows the law and he/she is more familiar with police and government procedure than you are. When the police question you, they are doing so because they want serious answers. Serious answers to legal questions require the help of a good attorney. Under our legal system, many problems are resolved with negotiated dispositions - a good attorney can help you with this far better than you can help yourself. Even if you are 100% innocent, it might not be entirely obvious to the arresting officer - but it's best to allow your attorney to make that determination on your behalf. Police are not stupid - if they arrested you, they think you are at fault. As your attorney, it's my job to make clear the reasons why you should receive favorable consideration.

Please remember these points:

 You always have the right to be silent - you do not have to "prove" that you are innocent.
 Do not try to "explain what happened" without your attorney present.

If you are currently facing criminal charges or expect that you possibly may be, IMMEDIATELY STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING - CALL YOUR LAWYER NOW! Do not compound your difficulties by doing any more of whatever it is that got you in trouble - stop it immediately and call your attorney.
